Surviving your own art!

DONT WORK FOR FREE.

Whilst the word “exposure” will be rammed down your throat for the first few years of your creative life you'll soon learn that people die of exposure. Unless it can pay your bills or you are compensated in some other way that directly benefits you then don't bother.

DONT BE A PERFECTIONIST.

Trust me, I thought some piece of the work Ihave done in the past were only fit to wipe my bum with until someone wanted to buy them. You will ALWAYS be your own worst critic and art truly is in the eye of the beholder. So don't bin it, put it out there and wait for the right set of eyes to find it.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF.

You will spend a significant part of your life sniffing paint fumes, hitting drums or staring at a computor screen. It can be lonely, shitty and sometimes depressing as hell. Make sure you exercise, meet your friends regularly and take plenty of breaks. Self care is mandatory when your creativity is your business.

ITS OK TO GIVE UP.

I used to give up at least once a month. I don't know where the idea came from that I should suffer for my art but trust me it's bullshit. I don't want to sit on my death bed and think, “hmm that sucked but look at the pretty pictures I made.”. If it's hurting too much then STOP. Take a break and go back to it later.

BECOME MULTI PASSIONATE.

Following on from the last point. When you inevitably hit breaking point you will need something else to pour some of your attention into. Learn a new instrument, paint something different, write a romance novel, whatever get's you giggling invest in it.

YOUR PASSION IS NOT “OUT THERE”.

Don't confuse your work with the passion it brings you. People spend too long looking for their passion without realising that passion is what you bring to your work, not derive from it. Take the things you love and make them platforms for passion, you'll have an easier time of it if you do.

YOU ARE AWESOME!

Even if it's not all going tickety-boo at the moment at least you're giving it a go! That means you are at least the kind of person who is attempting to make a go of it and that definitely counts for something. I don't know who it counts with but I definitely admire it anyway. So there.

Good Luck,

Keep Making,

Eat a muffin,

Drink tea,

I love you.
